When you have children with autism, staying indoors while also giving them the stimulation they need can be a real challenge. With the stay-at-home recommendations getting extended across the country, it’s likely that you’re going to need to keep your kids at home throughout the summer. If you’re like most parents, this thought is likely sparking a bit of panic. You’re already struggling to keep them entertained without school activities. What can you do to keep them from getting bored in the future? Here are a few great activities that the entire family can both participate in and enjoy together.
Indoor Obstacle Course
If your kids love physical activity, use this to your advantage. Create an indoor obstacle course throughout your house. All you need is a little imagination and patience to set the course up. Use things you already have around the house. Encourage your kids to crawl under dining chairs, circle around pillows on the floor, and balance on couch cushions on the living room carpet. These activities not only burn energy but also help children with autism work on their motor skills.
Make Your Own Playdough
Getting out of the house to buy new clay and playdough isn’t easy with the stay-at-home order. Instead of turning to online stores and ordering tons of overpriced containers, make your own! All you need is a cup of cornstarch and some water. Mix the cornstarch with enough water to create a squishable dough. Your kids can even help with this part! If you want to make it colorful, stir in some food coloring to create bright and fun shades your kids will love to play with.
Have a Dance Party
Music is one of the best ways to bring the family together. Consider having a dance party at least a few times a week. Clear space in the living room or playroom and put your kids’ favorite music on. Then, encourage them to get down and boogie! It’s guaranteed to be fun and give everyone plenty of stress-relieving laughs!
Play Video Games
If your child has a passion for video games, let them entertain themselves with their favorite games while you take care of other things around the house. Just make sure to set boundaries and make it clear when they need to stop and play with something else.
Create Time for Their Hobbies
It’s easy to get so focused on finding new activities for children with autism that you forget to leave time for them to indulge in the things they already enjoy. Set aside time for them to pursue their hobbies and interests throughout the day. When they’re able to focus on something they enjoy or something that brings them comfort, you’ll likely see an improvement in their mood and an increase in their willingness to try new games and experiences.
Need a Little Help?
Keeping children with autism entertained and happy at home doesn’t have to be difficult. Think outside the box and don’t hesitate to reach out for help if you’re feeling overwhelmed or confused.
