Selecting a Psychotherapist

Selecting a Psychotherapist

Participating in psychotherapy is a wonderful step toward reducing distress and improving satisfaction in life. Choosing the right psychotherapist for you or your child is an important step in the process. Selecting a good therapist will have a positive impact on the benefits received from therapy. So, how do you know if the therapist you have elected to have a consultation with is a good one for you? In general it is important to get a feel for the psychotherapist’s experience, credentials and interpersonal fit with you. The following questions can be helpful to ask your potential psychotherapist during an initial session or over the phone as you consider your options.

1. What are your credentials and/or training? (For more information on credentials see our blog “What is the difference between mental health professionals?”)

2. Are you licensed?

3. What experience do you have in relation to the particular problem I am looking for help with?

4. What are your particular specialties?

5. What are your fees? Do you offer sliding scale fees or accept insurance?

6. What is your cancellation policy?

7. Are other family members allowed to be involved in treatment? How do you go about involving family members?

8. Do you offer an on call service for after hours care or emergency care?

It is also important to consider how you feel talking with this person to assess the interpersonal fit. For more information on next steps see our blog “Beginning Psychotherapy”.
